Flooring in Melbourne
Flooring quotes live and die on two numbers: the area in square metres and the state of what is under your current floor. Measure each room wall to wall, note what the floor is now, and add photos — that is usually enough for installers to quote without a first visit.
Sanding and polishing existing boards, laying hybrid or laminate, new carpet, or fixing water-damaged boards: describe the job once and flooring installers covering your postcode quote in writing.

Common questions
Flooring questions, answered straight
How do I measure for a flooring quote?
Length by width of each room in metres, wall to wall, ignoring furniture. Add roughly 8–10% for cutting waste — installers confirm the final figure on site. Note stairs and wardrobes separately, they are priced differently.
How long before I can walk on a polished floor?
Water-based finishes usually take light foot traffic in 24 hours and furniture after 2–3 days; oil-based finishes need longer. Plan sleeping arrangements before the job starts — ask each quote to state cure times.
Can I supply the flooring myself?
Usually yes. Say so in the job description so installers price labour, underlay and prep separately. You carry the material warranty; they carry the workmanship.
My boards squeak. Do they need replacing?
Rarely. Squeaks are usually boards moving on nails or a subfloor gap, and can often be screwed down or shimmed. Describe where it squeaks and what the floor sits on if you know.
